Progress

In the first phase of the project (i.e., during month 1 to month 3) an analysis of requirements and existing architectures took place. The project started with a three day workshop (General Assembly) that served as a tutorial to bring all project members to a common level of understanding. Thereafter, WPs 1 and 2 collected and analyzed requirements from the automotive, aerospace, industrial, and consumer applications domains. WP 3 performed an analysis of requirements for the cross-domain methodology framework. The analysis of requirements with respect to networking, resource management, robustness, and composability was the focus of WPs 4-6.

In the following three months (month 4 to month 6), the key decisions about the architecture principles were described in order to establish the constraints for the work within the individual work packages. Therefore, the architecture board devised a general architecture overview and architecture principles that apply to all considered application domains. The outcome of this work ensures that the results of the other technical work packages can be integrated at the end of the project.

From month 7 till month 10, the description of the architectural services of the reference architecture template and the methodology framework occurred. This project phase involved detailed work within the work packages, where each of the WPs 1, 2, 4 and 5 employed a unique viewpoint (e.g., industrial domain in WP1, networking and resource management in WP4, robustness in WP5) for identifying and specifying platform services. The platform services can encompass domain-independent core services, as well as domain-specific optional services. In WP3, the key principles of the methodology have been defined. The methodology support from requirements specification phase to quality evaluation phase has been drafted and a description language for modelling architecture and services has been selected (UML-MARTE).

At month 11, the results of WP1 to WP6 were integrated into a preliminary version of a common document describing the reference architecture template and the methodology. These results were presented to the interested public at a GENESYS workshop, which served a major dissemination event and also served for the acquisition of feedback from specialists outside the consortium.

From month 12 to month 15, WP1 and WP2 have performed an assessment of the preliminary version of the reference architecture template and methodology framework from the industrial and consumer application domain points of view. The satisfaction of the requirements that were identified at the beginning of the project was evaluated. In addition, suggestions for improvements of the reference architecture template and the methodology were produced, as well as recommendations for future research projects after GENESYS.

In parallel to the industrial assessment, the implementation of four prototypes has started at month 12. These prototypes have implemented selected architectural services of the reference architecture template in order to evaluate the feasibility and cost of implementing the GENESYS architecture.

Based on the feedback from the public workshop, the results of the assessment and the insights gained during the prototype implementations, the reference architecture template and the methodology framework were updated from M15 to M18. In addition, the major results of GENESYS were described concisely in a book. The GENESYS book serves as major instrument for dissemination of the GENESYS results and will facilitate the exploitation of the GENESYS architecture at industrial partners and in future research (e.g., follow-up projects).
