Impact

The potential use includes the further research and development in the industrial and consumer application domains that will lead to more advanced products allowing European companies to keep or to achieve world-leading positions in computing solutions. In particular, the results of the GENESYS project will be an important input for the detailed research plan of ARTEMISIA. ARTEMISIA is a Joint-Technology Initiative (JTI), which will serve as a common platform to coordinate these additional development activities succeeding GENESYS at the European level.

Initially, additional research and development activities are planned within the JTI at pre-product level. Within the JTI, follow-up projects can perform instantiations of the GENESYS reference architecture template for real-world applications in the different application domains. Due to the constrained time frame, the prototypes within the GENESYS project will only focus on the implementation of selected central architectural concepts. The implementation of complete instantiations of the reference architecture template with a complete set of services required for the use in a corresponding application domain will be up to future projects. The realization of real-world applications will be an important activity in the development path to products based on the results of this project.

Another important step in the development path after the completion of the project will be partial upgrading of existing systems using GENESYS technology. For example, in the automotive domain we envision the replacement of a few ECUs in a car with GENESYS technology in the beginning. Such a partial use of the project results would demonstrate the merits of the GENESYS reference architecture template, as well as give manufacturers time to perform a managed evolution during the transition period to the GENESYS reference architecture template.

Furthermore, during this phase in the development path libraries of different implementations of core and optional services can be expected to emerge. The startup of a component market for platform services and the emergence of suppliers of GENESYS technology can be expected to boost the attractiveness of the GENESYS reference architecture template and the use in more advanced European products.

Finally, full-scale systems using GENESYS technology are envisioned. The implementation of complete applications based on the GENESYS reference architecture template will unleash the full advantages of the cross-domain approach. These advantages will include the exploitation of the economics of scale in the semiconductor industry, the uniform knowledge profiles for embedded systems engineers, and the avoidance of fragmentation through a cross-domain development methodology.
